Of all the women in my bridal party, I somehow came to Jamaica with the least amount of beauty products. This is especially surprising given that I am a beauty blogger!!! But it really comes down to my simplicity and decisiveness. I wanted to be as efficient as possible and take only what I needed. Razors were just one more thing that I didn’t want to take up space in my toiletry bag. I had never gotten waxed prior to my wedding but I knew that that was one of the beauty services that I wanted to get done.
In the end I went with sugaring instead of waxing and it was a great choice. Sugaring is much more natural as it is made from lemon juice and sugar. The women who worked with me talked about how it was traditional in India and is what she prefers. I stayed smooth throughout the entire wedding weekend and honeymoon. I loved not having an extra step in the shower because less shower time means more ocean time! The smooth feeling lasted way longer than shaving ever has so it was a win win for me. I credit a lot of the success to Shobha. I researched a ton of different facilities in New York and the reviews speak for themselves! Shobha are experts at what they do.
Overall it was a great experience. Little things stuck out to me beyond the smooth long lasting result. The people that were working at Shobha were friendly and professional. I loved that the space was bright and colorful as well as extremely clean. It also was nice for me that Shobha isn’t on ground level, it offered another layer of privacy.
For my first go around I decided to go with a full leg and bikini wax. I am the type of person that likes to be prepared so I did my due diligence and researched beforehand. Below are the tips most frequently mentioned that ended up working really well for me.
Wear loose clothing – This tip isn’t just for spray tans, after you walk out of the appointment you will want to be comfy and limit friction for obvious reasons.
Take Tylenol or ibuprofen – Some people suggest taking a shot, other people recommend a topical cream. I went with my gut and took a Midol before I went in for my appointment. Unless my pain tolerance just tripled, it really helped!
Grow it out for a month – Apparently my hair grows slow because the two – three weeks thing didn’t work for me! Some of the hair on my thighs was still non-existent at this point. I needed at least another week for it to get to that 1/4 inch mark.
Don’t go during your period – This one is relatively self explanatory but during your period that area is a lot more sensitive. A lot of places will still take you but Shobha doesn’t for a number of reasons.
Invest in product – Soothing wipes were super helpful for me afterward. I didn’t get any products for bikini bumps or ingrown hairs and I ended up being fine, but that isn’t the case for everyone.
Make small talk – This doesn’t address your physical comfort but interpersonally it can be super uncomfortable to be lying there naked while the technician is working. I took the time to ask questions about her process and sugaring in general. This was great for the purposes of this blog post, but just in general it is a good idea to learn about what you’re doing to your own body.
